About the Role:

Under the supervision of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Breastfeeding Coordinator, provides breastfeeding promotion, encouragement and support to all pregnant and breastfeeding women on WIC. The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor I is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and strives to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.

Location: This position is shared at two locations: 2400 Belvidere Road, Waukegan IL (Belvidere Medical Building) Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday (8:30am – 4:30pm)

                                                                                                      1840 Green Bay Road, Highland Park IL (North Shore Health Center) Thursday (11:00am – 7:00pm)

Skills and Experience

  • Provides basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including educating them about the risks of not breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers and successfully initiating and continuing breastfeeding. Helps mothers prevent common breastfeeding concerns.
  • Works with other WIC employees and medical staff to become part of clinic flow to minimize client wait times and provide optimal customer service.
  • Provides one-on-one breastfeeding counseling/support services to WIC clients at assigned clinics.
  • Counsels WIC mothers via telephone (call or text) by providing encouragement and support for breastfeeding prior to delivery, during the early postpartum period and as appropriate thereafter. May require being available via phone outside of regular work hours.
  • Follows up on calls to the Breastfeeding Hotline in a timely manner.
  • Runs computer reports and documents contacts with pregnant and breastfeeding women according to protocol. Documents services and one-on-one/telephone counseling in Cornerstone case notes.
  • Assists in building and maintaining clinic caseload by enrolling new pregnant, breastfeeding, postpartum, and infants in Cornerstone. Promotes breastfeeding and WIC services to Medicaid Presumptive Eligibility (MPE) and pregnant women early in their first trimester to patients of the FQHC.
  • Assists in maintaining inventory of breast pumps and supplies at assigned clinics.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of breastfeeding issues/trends through appropriate training and continuing education. Participates in Peer Counselor meetings, staff trainings and breastfeeding in-services.


Education, Qualifications, and Certification:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or G.E.D. certificate.
  • Requires completion of “Loving Support” Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Training Program (or a similar 20-hour training which includes all the significant Loving Support components) within the first 6 months of hire.
  • A woman of the community, with similar characteristics (i.e. age, race, cultural ethnicity, education and socioeconomic level) of WIC participants and must have breastfed at least one baby within the last 5 years (does not need to be currently breastfeeding).
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime as necessary.
